A wild turkey trap is made by digging a ditch and then over one end a rude structure of logs is built, covered at the top. This structure shouldn’t be tight but it must be sufficiently close as not to let the birds through. Indian corn is scattered in the ditch and also inside the pen. The wild turkeys will follow up the corn in the ditch and will emerge from it on the inside. Once they arrive there, the birds usually don’t think of descending into the ditch but instead they walk round and round the pen, looking through the logs’ chinks for finding a way to escape.

The ditch should end about the pen’s center and a bridge made out of earth, grass and sticks should be built over the ditch, just inside of the pen and as close as possible to the logs. If you won’t do this, the bird in its going around might step inside the ditch and the moment it will arrive there, the bird will most likely follow the light and as a consequence, will reach the outside of the pen.
